I'm always happy to feature him in a concert..  And to see him elsewhere too.   Most recently I saw him at Derry Down in Winter Haven..  There was a full house & it was wonderful..  He's a Florida native - (altho he lives elsewhere now).    He was Richie Haven's guitarist..  (thus he for sure knows his way around a guitar).    He's creative.  Great songwriter. Great voice..  Great guitar.   The real deal.

Per Charlie:  My original Americana and Blues music comes with a little Tennessee twang, a little Louisiana spice and a big hunk of Florida gator tail. Come have some!        

     Per Charlie:  This was a highlight of the year, a house concert for a lively bunch of original music fans. It's the third time I've played at Gloria's place - thanks so much to her and Craig for promoting live music. Al, Tom and I played songs from The Forest, a few St Pete Mountain Boys numbers, a couple of new ones that will be on the upcoming Folkie CD, and of course a bit of blues. We wound up with a rousing singalong on I Know You Rider.

 Here's what Charlie has to say about T.C.:  (The two did a gig together last night in St Pete @MNM BarBQ where Charlie hosts open mic night - plus featured guest  every Wed )..    Harmonica madman TC Carr. has played with all kinds of famous people, from Dickey Betts, who called him "one of the best I ever heard" (and made him snort gin with him) to Bruce Hornsby, who called TC's harmonica style "a lost art." TC's band has won every accolade there is to win in the Tampa Bay area, and regularly packs the Ka-Tiki and other local venues.   TC and I have been friends for many years. He's appeared on several of my CDs, including the recent Bluescoast Sessions. We have a live CD in the works, recorded at a festival on the beach a few years ago. When TC and I get together, we always have a blast, and you will too. If you come, that is - if you don't, you'll end up having a cold hot dog for dinner, throwing up in the sink and crying yourself to sleep.

Altho Brendan performs quite regularly in Irish pubs in the area - and, for sure, he's a great entertainer & always a crowd-pleaser at the pubs, he doesn't very often do "listening" concerts. At the Dome he'll be in  "concert" mode and treating us to ballads & originals plus, of course, a few favorite pub sing-a-longs.        Brendan Nolan is a true Dubliner. He grew up in Ireland at a time when there was a resurgence of interest in Irish music and when the singer-songwriter boom had taken off in North America. Both of these genres would ultimately influence his own music .

Sam grew up in north Florida. At age 13, he found the music of both Chet Atkins and Merle Travis. A personal reflection:   Altho I’m a Fla native,  I never knew much about “Fla Folk Music”  until I moved to Tampa in late 1979 shortly after WMNF started broadcasting (Sept 14, 1979).   I immediately started listening..   Frank & his late wife Ann hosted a Fla Folk Show early on.  And that show, my friends,  was my introduction to the Fla Folk World.  I guess I wouldn’t be exaggerating when I say that WMNF, & that  show in particular, changed my life..   

 

Very cool honor from Walkin’ Lawton:  Frank rec’d a state resolution honoring him from our late great  Governor Lawton Chiles – plus Walkin’ Lawton presented  Frank with a pair of his “walkin’ boots.”  

 

A peek at add’l awards/honors (some of which included Ann):   Florida Folk Heritage Award;  Julian Prescott History Award, Florida Historical Society Golden Quill Award, the Stetson Kennedy Foundation Fellow Man & Mother Earth Award. ABOUT VGO:    Michael Stock, DJ, WLRN-Miami, describes Vgo as a mlti-instrumentalist & Performing Anthropologist.    Oh my.  Vgo doesn’t do computers.   Doesn’t do email.   He asked me to mail him (as in snail mail) the particulars about this concert.   Old-time.  That’s Vgo.  It’s no surprise that he’s very well known in the Fla Old Time Music World.    Alas, the Fla Old Time Music Championships no longer happen.   But when they did, year after year Vgo would either win or place in most every category.  For instance, here are stats from the 2015 Championships:  Dobro/2nd; Autoharp/1st; Finger-pick guitar/3rd;  Appalachian Dulcimer/1st; Rhythm Instrument/ 4th (jug);  Mandolin/2nd.     He didn’t win or place in the banjo category in 2015 which I suspect, bcause of all his past 1st places, he wasn’t allowed to compete.

 

I don’t know what instruments he’ll have with him at the concert – but – I hope the banjo will be included.

2.   Wed August 30 @ 7:30 pm.   Gary Reid’s theatrical presentation:  A Life of Sorrow. The Life & Times of Carter Stanley.

   note:   This play includes some music.  But it’s not a musical..

 

Gary Reid  is a walking history book when it comes to the Stanley Brothers.  

A few months ago Craig & I  went to the Orlando main library & saw Gary in a performance of his very compelling & interesting play.   

 

As of June of this year Gary reported that  in less than three years he had offered 61 performances in 11 states.  (and there have been add’l performances since June)  Obviously, the word is out that the play is outstanding.    He’s soon to be doing a Fla tour (mostly libraries)..   Methinks we’re privileged that we were able to “piggy-back”  a performance at the house in between his “regular” performances.   And we certainly hope to have lots of company for our “house”  performance.    (This will be our 2nd theatrical performance.  The previous one was well received)..

Doug MacLeod, concert & acoustic blues guitar workshop.  Congrats to Doug. He won  “Acoustic Artist of the Year”  at the Blues Foundation’s 2017 Blues Music Awards in Memphis.
