About the Performers:

Jenny James & Ron Gilbert (aka ROSEVILLE FAIR): Two hearts, two voices, two guitars. Jenny and Ron have a romantic blend spiced with flute, Celtic whistle, mandolin, and banjo. Roseville Fair is down-to-earth, feel-good music.
www.rosevillefair.jjweb.us

BRENDAN NOLAN: Originally from Dublin Ireland, Brendan has been a resident of St Pete Beach since the early 90s. Since landing in Florida, he has endeared himself to acoustic music fans, not only in the Tampa Bay/St Pete area, but all across the state. Brendan's performances are spiced with good humor and innovative musicianship on guitar and bodhráán, and as Steve Winick noted in Dirty Linen magazine, "a rich baritone voice."
www.brendannolan.com

FRANCES PISACANE & JASMINE HART: (aka JUNIPER): With their jigs, reels & airs, Juniper weaves a tight tapestry of haunting melodies, lush harmonies, fancy fiddling, fiery rhythms, compelling vocals.

JIMMY CROWLEY: Jimmy has recently moved to Florida from Ireland. We're happy to introduce him to the Florida Folk Family during FOFF FEST '08. Jimmy is a living legend in Irish Folk music. He comes from Cork, in the south of Ireland, a city with musical richness mirroring the city's diversity.... Per Mick Moloney: He is a consummate stage performer as well as a song writer, adding colour to his songs by weaving stories about Cork characters, maritime exploits and daily life into his act. His singing style is truly unique. Nobody hearing Jimmy could possibly mistake him for anyone else.”
www.jimmycrowley.com

LLOYD GOLDSTEIN & RAY BELANGER (aka SINGING TREE): Lloyd & Ray stunned the '07 FOFF FEST audience with their performance. It's not everyday we get to witness a double bass & hammer dulcimer duo. At the end of their set there was a well deserved standing ovation and cries for "more - more - more." Back by popular demand.

WIL MARING & ROBERT BOWLIN DUO PLUS ORRIN STAR IN A VALENTINES DAY NIGHT BLUEGRASS & FOLK EXTRAVAGANZA (A DOUBLE BILL)
www.myspace.com/wilmaringwww.youtube.com/profile?user=WilMaring http://www.orrinstar.com/ www.myspace.com/orrinstar

Wil is a past winner of the Chris Austin Songwriting Contest winner (@ Merlefest); Robert Bowlin is a former Bill Monroe Bluegrass Boy, and has played with the Osbourne Brothers, Kathy Mattea, Maura O'Connell, Tom T.Hall, Farron Young, Richard Greene, to name a few. Wil plays acoustic guitar and sings lead. Her songs and style arecontemporary folk, and she is often compared to Nanci Griffith. Robert plays acoustic guitar (and sometimes fiddle) and sings harmony. He's a former winner of the National Flatpicking Guitar Championship. To say that he's an outstanding "picker" is putting it mildly. DJ Dave Higgs of Nashville Public Radio says this about Wil & Robert: "Absolutely, hands-down some of the most mesmerizing, exciting, interesting and enjoyable acoustic music I have ever heard. Wil's songs are just in a league of their own."

Orrin Star is in a league of his own too. He's vocals are twangy & bluegrassy. His humor is - well - laughable .. Orrin Star is an award-winning guitarist who combines hot picking, cool singing and good humor. Once described as ‘Arlo Guthrie-meets-Doc Watson’, he is a past National Flatpicking Guitar Champion, has appeared on A Prairie Home Companion, and boasts a repertoire that ranges from from bluegrass standards to little-known folk gems to fingerstyle blues.

SOUTH TAMPA HOUSE CONCERT
FEATURING AMY MINARD
Date: Sunday, Dec. 9, 2007. Time: 5 p.m. Doors 4:30.
Amy is a lovely young woman who enhances the Tampa UU church services with her sweet personality and her music talents. She's a music student at USF who has recently purchased a new instrument and can use some assistance in paying for it. We hope the concert will be of benefit to her -- and we KNOW that it will be of benefit everyone who gets to experience whatever wonderful music program this talented & creative young musician puts together.

Here's a note from Amy: " After two years of searching, 27 trial
instruments, and countless music shops, I finally found my new viola. Then,
of course, the loan money fell through, so I'm throwing a benefit concert!
It'll be an intimate holiday concert where you can meet the new love of my
life. There will be light refreshments, and please feel free to bring
something to share. RSVP to Gloria. It's my dream to become a professional
viola player after I finish my Masters this spring -- thank you for helping
that dream come true! "

Free-will generous donations for Amy (so the love of her life won't be
repossessed) will be welcome..

WHO: THE DRAGIEVA STRING QUARTET.
WHEN: Thursday 11/15. Concert 8:00. Doors 7:30.
COST: $10 at the door. $8 advance.

The members of the quartet are OLGA DRAGIEVA, first violin; BENNETT ASTROVE, second violin; AMY MENARD, viola; and TOM KERSEY, cello. Ms Dragieva, a virtuoso from Bulgaria, is the concertmaster of the USF symphony orchestra. She dazzles with a brilliant, bright sound. Mr. Astrove, the youngest in the group, is ahead of his time and already a first violinist in serveral orchestras. He lends beautiful, cantabile harmonies to the music. Ms. Menard, a Florida native, has been prinicpal violist of multiple orchestras. Her rich sound is the heart of the quartet. Mr. Kersey, a professional cellist and composer, completes the sound of the group with hiswarm, deep, sonorous tones. Theirs is music to stimulate the mind and delight the senses.

If you pay on-line, your receipt is your ticket. Please bring it with you to the concert. It will be your entry to the concert.

“Authentic.” “Timeless.” “Harmonious.” “Exhilarating.” Any or all of these adjectives could describe the sound created by Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion (eye-ree-un). Their musical richness... is irrefutable proof that Sarah Lee, the disarming granddaughter of Woody & daughter of Arlo, and her husband and musical partner Johnny Irion, the prodigious South Carolinian, quite naturally bring out the best in each other.

SKIPPERS (1)
Tuesday Oct 23. 8pm. $10.
TAFEE PRESENTS: JUSTIN TOWNES EARLE W/TED WRAY OPENING. In comparing Justin Townes Earle to his father, Steve Earle, it's apparent that the apple hasn't fallen too far from the tree; however, with his impressive new EP, Yuma, it's also apparent that Justin has quite a bit in common with the man who gave him his middle name. Like the late Townes Van Zandt, Justin uses a base of acoustic blues and traditional folk to build his own brand of American roots music. ( Per Justin: "On Yuma, I do take a very traditional approach because it's what I've done the longest." ) Justin also shows influences from both Van Zandt and the elder Earle in his choice of a narrative style of songwriting that eschews self-expression in favor of speaking through various characters.

For more information on Justin and to hear his music, visit http://myspace.com/justinearle

ABOUT TED WRAY: Ted was a founder of the Tampabay Fingerstyle Guitar Guild. Between tirelessly participating in and promoting the Guild and its members, plus pursuing his own solo career, Ted stays very busy. He has, however, agreed to find time in his schedule to welcome fellow finger-style guitar player Justin Townes Earle to Tampa by particpating in Justin's Skipper's gig as his opening act.

David's one of those guys you may have heard of thru Johnny Cash, Emmylou Harris and Steve Earle, all of whom (among others) have covered his songs. The
Houston Press described him this way: "...Olney stands out like a jalapeño in a bowl of vanilla pudding in Nashville, where he lives, and throughout an 18-album career has stubbornly gone his own way, making brilliant, unheralded albums as artists from Linda Ronstadt to bluegrass king Del McCoury record his songs."

A. REVIEW OF RECENT CONCERTS BY ME

On July 29, 2007: South Tampa House Concert/Potluck/Circle Jam featuring Dean Station w/opening act Ms. Goody. This was a very enjoyable event. Ms. Goody provided a great opening set. Dean Station was a big hit. Personable, warm, & very talented trio. The jam was a hit. At one point we had 3 spoon players jamming. Very cool! As for future house concerts, we do hope to resume them soon, but for now we're taking a little break.

On July 8 2007: Tantalus Quartet was featured at CONCERTS IN THE UU DOME. They brought the house down - as expected - We had a good turnout. Unbelieveable that a trio with this much talent & charm & personality would be performing at our rather smallish Dome - but we're not complaining. They sure lived up to this quote: "The Tantalus Quartet gave an electrifying performance..."

On Sunday Aug 12 AMY CAROL WEBB w/Rebekah Pulley were featured at CONCERTS IN THE UU DOME. Ms Amy was (same as Tantalus) ELECTRIFYING. ALSO AMAZING - DYNAMIC - OUTSTANDING & every other complimentary adjective one can come up with. Sweet Rebekah was a big hit too. She's sweet & talented & easy on the ears. ( Also - Amy was the guest speaker at the Sunday church service -- and she had everyone hanging on her every word. She's quite the dynamic speaker. One church member exclaimed that if we had her in our pulpit every Sunday, we wouldn't have room for the throngs that would be showing up to hear her)

B. CONCERTS IN THE UU DOME (UU Church of Tampa)

Sunday SEPT 16, 3 p.m. $10

Concerts in the UU Dome Presents:BLIND WILLIE JAMES & DAVID LEE MAXWELL

ABOUT WILLIE: Blind Willie James is known for his inspiring versions of blues and gospel songs. James is originally from Live Oak in north Florida. He was born blind and was orphaned at an early age. Early on, he sang gospel music in church He began playing the piano while a student at the Florida School for the Blind in St. Augustine (where one of his classmates was Ray Charles).
Over the years he has collaborated with a variety of musicians, including the late Diamond Tooth Mary McClain with whom he appeared several times at the Florida Folk Festival; and in the early 90s the two did an appearance at Carnegie Hall. For a short time he was also a member of The Blind Boys of Alabama.Willie learned to sing by oral tradition. He learned to play the piano by ear. Immersed in the traditional Black Gospel music indigenous to the backwoods of North Florida, Willie's music exemplifies the blurring of lines between gospel and blues. Willie will sing a soul-stirring "Motherless Child" and then go into a suitable-for-late-night version of Hank Ballard's "The Twist," rife with all the innuendo the writer intended.
In 1999 Blind Willie James received the prestigious Florida Folk Heritage Award from the Governor of the State of Florida.
Altho he is getting on up in years, Willie still has much to offer. He is an entertainer extraordinaire. It's important that he not be allowed to rest too much on his laurels. Now with David Lee Maxwell as his musical partner & sidekick, we can all look forward to losing our blues courtesy of Willie & David .

With a voice perfectly reinforcing searing melodies; provacative, powerful lyrics telling captivating stories; plus a finger-picking acoustic guitar style that he describes as "slight of hand," Justin shows that he is forging his own exciting path. Although his appearance at Skipper's Smokehouse will be his first ever in Florida, since the release of Yuma, Justin has played steadily in the Southeast, Midwest and on the East Coast, including having opened for Tim O'Brien and Shawn Mullins as well as having toured as a support act with Jason Isbell, formerly of the Drive-By Truckers. Before arriving in Florida, Justin will also have completed a month-long tour of clubs in Europe.

Per the Weekly Planet (now known as Creative Loafing) in naming Ted "Best Singer-Songwriter" .... Wray is always gracious and highly entertaining... His original repertoire includes impressive fingerstyle instrumentals, poignant love songs and some of the funniest, quirkiest novelty songs you’ll ever hear. With all this in his pocket, Ted keeps his audience entertained with a performance rich in diversity. Combined with his seasoned voice and adept guitar and harmonica skills is an honesty that you can hear in his songs and feel in his presence. After catching his performance, you'll know why Ted Wray is one of Tampa Bay's busiest musicians.
