(UU Church of Tampa)
www.uutampa.org
Unitarian Universalist Church of Tampa (UU Dome) 11400 Morris Bridge Rd, Tampa, FL 33637; 813-988-8188

Have slowed down w/the UU Dome concerts. Not stopped - just slowed down. I have hopes of a classical one this summer w/two local wonderful classical artists, pianist John Hernandez & tenor Paul Diaz-Cobo. Also, in the not too distant future, I have hopes of organizing a concert or two featuring some of our talented local young musicians (teens & even younger) that I've met recently. Will post the details as soon as they get worked out..

Looking to the future:Jan 2010: Acclaimed Nashville guitarist RICHARD SMITH
www.richardsmithmusic.com

Late Feb 2010: STILL ON THE HILL
www.stillonthehill.com
(hopefully a childrens concert & a grown-up concert)

AND.. Of course, between now & then, I'm sure there are others that will materialize.

PLEASE STAY TUNED.

THURS 6/18/09 . Doors 7:30 - Concert 8:00. ELLIS. with LORNA BRACEWELL OPENING.
(Both are Contemporary singers-songwriters- guitarists)

I met Ellis and Terri Mazurek, her agent, at this year's Folk Alliance conference. Ellis had an official showcase in a fairly good-sized room. I enjoyed her set very much - as did the packed SRO crowd. To say that she was well received is an understatement. I later got a chance to meet her & Terri & told them about the house concerts & invited them to get in touch if they were ever headed this way & had an open date to fill.. And so it has come to pass. They are flying into Tampa & then headed to Sanibel for R&R. Ellis has some Tampa fans who rec'd word from her about the concert & theyhave already RSVP'd. But.. There is still plenty of space. Give me a shout if you'd like to attend.

Possessing the heart ofa troubadour, the soul of a poet and the voice of a virtuoso, he is as distinctive an entertainer as he is a songwriter. A review from a recent house concert: ".... his original songs are about Detroit, life, social justice and peace. Steve'ssongwriting has been recognized by the Music To Life and the Great Lakes Songwriting competitions.... He is quite the entertainer, knows how to be serious and how to have fun with his music. He played one instrumental which was very much like a ragtime piecethat was very interesting, and some of his other compositions were beautifully done, with unusual chord structures that tickled and surprised and soothed -- ah! Music! It delights the soul!... "

Either 8/5 OR 8/6/09? (to be determined) WALTER STRAUSS. Referred by Stevie Coyle. ( Contemporary Singer-songwriter. Spectacular guitar!!!) If you are a Burns Sisters fan, you are probably familiar w/Walter. He used to play guitar with them. Quite spectacuilar guitar at that! But not only is he a guitarist, he's a songwriter & a singer. To wit: "...... an amazing guitarist, composer, stylist, and humorist, he made the 350+ seat theater seem like a very special private show in his living room." - Eric Taber, Artistic Director, Margate Performing Arts Center, Margate,NJ.

http://www.archive.org/details/tgid2007-12-31.sbd.flac16

THE ROWAN BROTHERS: Chris & Lorin's musical journey began over 30 years ago on Columbia Records. Subsequent collaborations with older brother Peter, David Grisman, the Grateful Dead, so many others and a Grammy winning song happened along the way. The path has come full circle with the duo's active re-entry into full time touring, a new release on BOS Music plus the full complement of CD reissues of all the Columbia and Asylum titles. Sibling harmony at its zenith and a style all their own, the Rowan Brothers offer up a potent mixture of bluegrass flavored folk and Everlys/Louvins/Stanleys inspired rockabilly.

SUE CUNNINGHAM: During their current Fla. tour they are being joined by Sue Cunningham. Sue is a winner of numerous fiddle championships and has performed and recorded with numerous bluegrass groups. Though a native of Pittsburg, Sue now resides in West Palm Beach. In addition to being known as an expert fiddler, she is also known for her outstanding vocals. Altho her primary duty while she's with the Rowan Brothers will be to work her fiddling magic, she will also chime in vocally on some of the tunes.

THE ROWAN BROTHERS with SUE CUNNINGHAM (Rowans & Cunningham Trio) were a big hit recently at the 2009 Suwannee Springfest. They're sure to be a big hit at the UU Dome too.

WHEN: Sunday March 1, 2009

COST: $15 at the door. $12 advance. Teens $7.

(Guitar Workshop: Richard will be conducting a pre-concert guitar workshop beginning at 1 pm. Please contact Richard for details: rgilewitz@yahoo.com )

www.richardgilewitz.com

As one of the most graceful fingerstyle guitarists on the contemporary acoustic scene, Gilewitz stands out in his command of the 6 and 12-string guitar. With wit, humor and musical genius, Richard takes an audience on a musical journey from the past to the present.

Richard's original compositions are interspersed with compositions by the European and Spanish Classical works of J.S. Bach, Andres Segovia, Alonso de Mudarra, Fernando Sor and Isaac Albeniz. Richard's Traditional Folk selections encompass the American Primitive sounds of John Fahey and Leo Kottke. Further enhancing the audiences listening pleasure is an array of songs which were influenced by The Blues, Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar and Bluegrass.

Per Fingerstyle Guitar Magazine, "To say Richard Gilewitz has a unique personality would be an understatement. His quick wit and twisted sense of humor has made him an entertainer as well as a fine guitarist. He interacts with his audience, and as he puts it" 'the whole room is in concert.' "

The event emcee will be Jeanne Holton, a long-time folk music dj at WMNF radio. Brendan Nolan Headlines:

Originally from Dublin Ireland, Brendan has been a resident of St Pete Beach since the early 90s. He has since endeared himself to acoustic music fans, not only in the St Pete/Tampa Bay area, but all across the state and beyond. Brendan's performances are spiced with good humor and innovative musicianship on guitar and bodhráán, and as Steve Winick noted in Dirty Linen magazine, "a rich baritone voice."

Joining Brendan in the lineup:

Parson Brown, Roseville Fair, and Neighbors.

Parson Brown: Parson Brown is Ed Lehmann, Karen Zack, and Dave Lassa. Parson Brown’s music is described as 60s inspired folk with a mix of introspection, humor, originality and tradition.

Roseville Fair: Roseville Fair is Jenny James and Ron Gilbert, a husband and wife duo who present down-to-earth, feel-good music with a romantic bent. In addition to their sweet vocal harmonies, they are adept instrumentalists on guitar, flute, Celtic whistle, mandolin, and banjo. http://rosevillefair.jjweb.us Neighbors:

Neighbors is Bill Dudley, Eddie Parshall and Pasco Paul. They are, in fact, neighbors, residing in rural Pasco and Hernando counties, who started getting together a while back to partake in some back-porch jamming. Those back-porch jams recently morphed into the formation of "Neighbors."

FROM TRADITIONAL OLD-TIME BANJO PICKIN' TO CONTEMPORARY SINGER-SONGWRITERORIGINALS.

A NOT-T0-BE MISSED MINI-FOLK FEST.

It's that special time of the year. Time for political fundraisers. Phyllis Busansky is running for Supervisor of Elections, Hillsborough County. Folk musicians enjoy supporting political causes. Thus some of the area's finest folk musicians are pleased to be gathering at the SkipperDome in support of Phyllis' campaign. Please keep in mind. "Folk" can cover a lot ofterritory - both traditional & contemporary. From old-timey banjo pickin' to contemporary singer-songwriter originals. This mini-folk fest starts at 2 pm and ends at approximately 6 pm. Altho it's in support of a political campaign, the public is invited to come out and experience fabulous folk music regardless of one's political persuasion.

Our charming Emcee will be Ms Jan Milner. Our able soundguy will be MrBryan Smeed. A fine time will be had by all.

Bios of Performers: MIKE JURGENSEN: http://www.myspace.com/mikejurgensen Mike, a long-time Floridian, cites, among others on the national scene, the likes of James Taylor, David Wilcox and Cheryl Wheeler as influences. On the Florida scene, he cites, among others, the likes of Steve Blackwell andFrank Thomas. Mike performs at acoustic venues and folk festivals aroundthe state where he, with his gentle demeanor and relaxed delivery, isalways a favorite among Florida folk audiences. Several of his originalsongs have either won first place or have been finalists in varioussong-writing competitions, including the Best Florida Song competitions held at the annual Will McLean Folk Festival. Two of his songs are featured in the Edward R. Murrow Award-winning radio documentary"Apalachicola Doin' Time" produced by WUFT in Gainesville. His song "TheGolden Fleece of Tarpon Springs" is featured in a Florida HumanitiesCouncil project entitled "Settlers by the Sea." It's always a pleasure to experience Mike's sweet music.

JOHN HANCOCK & THE DECLARATION UNPLUGGED: John Hancock & The Declaration(of Independence - get it?). That John is one clever guy. John is a familiar face to regulars at Skipper's. He is the guy who greets you atthe entrance to the Skipperdome, checks your ID, takes your ticket moneyand wishes you a fun evening. For this very special occasion, John and his cohorts will take the stage and entertain with his own roots-informedoriginal music as well as selected tasty classics. Be advised, even thoyou may see John at the Skipper's entrance more frequently than on theSkipper's stage, don't be fooled. John is an apt musician who can more than hold his own with the national acts that frequently grace Skipper's stage.

Bunko Squad:
http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=202312775

Bunko Squad is Judy Tampa, John McEwen, George Pappas, and Harry Hayward.Bunko Squad sports a former punk-lite rocker and Midnighter with HankBallard; a guitarist who plays djembe, Irish bouzouki, and mandolin prettymuch all at once; a tall-tale-teller from West Virginia; and a drummer whose mouth is bigger than his kit. Quotes from area celebrities:(1) Per Ronny Elliott: "Bunko Squad is as thrilling as a Japanesemonster movie and you barely need sub-titles. I like them way more than snow skiing. Personally, I've never tried skiing. Did I mention how nice and polite they are? I give them an A+." (2) Per Dawn Pendola:"I've never heard any of those songs you play." (3) Per Bill Dudley:"Why would anyone ever write a song like that?" (4) Per Toby Bonar:"Yeah, man, all that stuff about West Virginia is true."

DALE WEBBER & LINDA FACKELDEY: Dale is an award winning masterold-time frailing banjoist. Linda and Dale both sing old-timey style. They have delighted audiences at folk festivals, including earlier thisyear at the annual Florida Folk Festival in White Springs. Mr. Ethnic, djof the WMNF monthly old-time music program and one of the movers andshakers of the Florida Old-time Music Championships, is a Dale & Linda fanand frequently plays their music. Mr. Ethnic knows about these things.Take his word for it: Dale & Linda are the real old timey music deal.

PAMELA JO HATLEY & STEELE OLMSTEAD: http://www.pamelajomusic.com/ Pamela Jo Hatley is a genuine country girl from Alabama who learned tosing in the church choir. She was born and raised on a farm in thefoothills of the Appalachians and has family roots in Sand Mountain,Alabama, from whence many great "old-time" musicians have come. PamelaJo sings and plays guitar and claw-hammer banjo. Her vocals are sweet andpure, bathed in southern charm. She performs music rooted deep in earlyAmerican history, pre-civil war era and beyond the seas to the "oldcountry." Pamela Jo has performed at the Florida Folk Festival, PinellasFolk Festival, and many other folk and acoustic venues. At the 25th AnnualFlorida Old Time Music Championship (2006) she earned first place inwomen's vocals and beginning banjo. On frequent occasions, Pamela Jo is accompanied by her able side-kick Steele Olmstead. Such will be the case at the Folkies for Phyllis event.

ERNIE WILLIAMS & THE BARKING DOGS: Ernie, whose day job is that ofProfessor of Philosophy at Saint Leo University, and whose clawhammerbanjo playing and singing is something to behold, is a member of anacoustic jam group, The Barking Dogs. The "dogs," who meet weekly in SanAntonio, are putting their show on the road -- the road to Skipper'sSmokehouse that is.
