Roy Zimmerman is a liberal leaning hysterically funny folk-singer-songwriter who writes and performs satirical songs about topical issues such as war, poverty, ignorance, bigotry, neo-conservatism, homophobia, greed, lust, fear, intelligent design and healthcare. His youtubes have garnered over 3 million views. Grant Peeples opens the show. Altho most of Grant's songs are environmentally or political charged, he also might throw a poignant love song into the mix - all the while singing in an articulate twang and growl .

Jan's songs combine down-home honesty with up-town sophistication, and have been described as Nanci Griffith meets Broadway. Jan holds a Music degree from University of Texas. I've seen her at the Woody Guthrie Festival & at Folk Alliance Conferences. I'm a fan. You will be too when you meet her. This will be her first performance in Tampa - Please help give her a nice Tampa welcome. P.S. Since its the holiday season, in addition to her own great songs, she's also promised to include a Hanukkah & Christmas song or two - to keep us in the holiday spirit.

February 25, 2010 Thursday. MICHAEL PICKETT at a South Tampa House Concert. http://www.michaelpickett.com Michael is a passionate performer from Canada who delivers original and traditional songs of the Delta but also includes contemporary roots based tunes (e.g., Ry Cooder, Tom Waits). Michael's instruments are 6-string and 12-string guitars plus a 1931 National Steel Duolian, and rack harmonica... And what a voice. Think John Hammond... with a twist. Michael's musical palette includes a couple of show-stoppers - one harmonica/a capella tune and a field holler that engages every audience to stomp their foot and clap in time. He's an artist who gives 100% to his audience. This is probably an over-used statement but it's true: Michael's "the real deal."

Rouse and others.

From 5:45 - 7:30 12-Minute Fast-Pitch Showcases featuring multiple musicians.

TWELVE-MINUTE FAST PITCH SHOWCASES: Applications will be accepted from now until December 20. Selections will be announced by New Year's Day.

To apply for a showcase: No application fee is required. Simply email your application to Gloria Holloway gshello at tampabay.rr.com . Provide a link to on-line audio or video samples. Include a short bio or provide a link to a bio. Please indicate the number of people performing and types of instruments. Provide a contact person, email address and phone number. You do not have to be a FOFF member to apply for a showcase; however, if selected, you (and accompanying musicians) will be strongly encouraged to join FOFF. You will also be strongly encouraged to support FOFF-Fest in its entirety (at least the mini-fest portion) and not to just show up for your twelve-minute showcase.

The idea behind the Fast-Pitch concept is to give as many musicians as possible a chance to perform in front of an audience and to also help ensure that there will be an audience. Please note. The showcase time is limited to 12 minutes. Basically, you will have time to introduce yourself and perform two (maybe three) songs. Per Jack Williams who witnessed similar (only shorter) fast-pitch showcases at the recent SE Region Folk Alliance Conference. "It's a bit like a test of the artists' skill at taking control of an onstage situation - which provides a great deal of insight into his or her ability to perform and hold an audience in spite of less-than-ideal circumstances. It was very interesting to watch and gratifying to see how many of the SERFA artists rose to the challenge and did a great job."

Tues 10/27/09. 8pm. HOLLY & BARRY TASHIAN. (Folk - Americana . Great harmonies) A tidbit about Barry. Remember the Remains? Barry was a Remain - The Remains appeared on the Ed Sullivan show and toured with & opened for The Beatles during their final American tour. Barry wrote an entertaining book about that experience. But that's only a little piece of Barry's music background. He has been a part of Emmy Lou Harris' band and recorded with Gram Parsons. Since 1972 he has been performing with Holly (they met in high school). Barry & Holly are duet singers, songwriters, and touring musicians who have performed together on the Grand Ole Opry, at festivals around the world and many places in-between. They have won numerous awards, recorded with the likes of Charlie Louvin and Nancy Griffith, , and have had their songs recorded by Kenny Rogers, Solomon Burke and others. FOFF has been invited back for the 5th year to participate in the New Pt Richey Founders Day Celebration. I'm on the FOFF board & am the FOFF coordinator for the FOFF stage. Our stage is inside Peace Hall. We will have chairs & air conditioning. Yippee!

The time both days in Peace Hall is from 1 to 5ish with an Open Mic from 1-2:15 both days. Followed by featured musicians.

On Saturday starting at 2:30 the Lineup is Jenny James & Ron Gilbert, Ken & Trisha Brooks & The Strumhollow Band, Mike Jurgensen, and we'll end the day with The Crystal Beach String Band.

On Sunday starting at 2:30, the lineup is Triad, Ella Jet, Rebecca Zapen. We'll end the day with The Mayhaws.

In addition to the FOFF stage inside Peace Hall on Sat & Sun afternoons, on Sunday morning from 10- noon, FOFF will also sponsor a folk/gospel set (including some sing-a-longs) on the park grounds (probably near the main stage) featuring the wonderful Susan Boyer Hailey.

I have hopes of a classical one this summer w/two local wonderful classical artists, pianist John Hernandez & tenor Paul Diaz-Cobo. I met Ellis and Terri Mazurek, her agent, at this year's Folk Alliance conference. Ellis had an official showcase in a fairly good-sized room. I enjoyed her set very much - as did the packed SRO crowd. To say that she was well received is an understatement. I later got a chance to meet her & Terri & told them about the house concerts & invited them to get in touch if they were ever headed this way & had an open date to fill.. And so it has come to pass. They are flying into Tampa & then headed to Sanibel for R&R. Ellis has some Tampa fans who rec'd word from her about the concert & theyhave already RSVP'd. But.. There is still plenty of space. The Dearing Concert Duo, featuring soprano Abha Dearing and classical guitarist Steven Dearing, will enthrall us with their classical music duets . Based in Detroit, Michigan they can be found performing on both sides of the Atlantic at festivals, on radio and television shows, and in various concert halls. They are the winners of six awards presented by the Motor City Music Foundation and their three recordings have received critical acclaim. Abha is the choir director at Birmingham Unitarian Church in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. She's an accomplished singer and flautist who has been performing since the age of five. She is currently pursuing a Masters Degree in Voice Performance at Oakland University. Steven holds a Masters degree in Guitar Performance and has been on faculty at the University of Windsor since 1995. He is one of Michigan's most reputable classical guitarists.

OPENING SET BY PIANIST JOHN HERNANDEZ: John is a native of Ecuador now residing in Tampa. He has made numerous appearances as recitalist and orchestra soloist. As a chamber musician, he has performed with members of symphony orchestras such as the Boston Symphony, Dusseldorf Symphony, Louisville Orchestra, and the National Symphony of Ecuador and has participated in festivals such as the Philharmonic Festival 1994, the First International Festival for Young Pianists in Ecuador, the Brevard Music Festival in North Carolina, the International Symposium and Piano Festival at Princeton University, the Contemporary Music Festival at New England Conservatory, and the New Paltz Summer Festival in New York.

He is the winner of national competitions in Ecuador such as the Guillermo Wright Vallarino Competition, the Cultural Merit for Outstanding Musician by the City Hall of Loja, and the German Cultural Center Competition. After receiving these recognitions, he became the youngest artist to be appointed to the Home of Culture of Ecuador. His versatility as a musician has led him to record for the soundtrack of the film “The Demoralization of Richard Engelsbird,” as well as “The Anthology of Ecuadorian Music,” a CD compilation of the most well known music of Ecuador.

He holds a Bachelor’s Degree with Distinction from Salvador Bustamante Celi National Conservatory of Music, a Performance Diploma with Highest Honors from Rimsky Korsakov Conservatory of Music in Ecuador, a Master’s Degree in Piano Performance from the University of Louisville.

Currently he works with the Tampa Bay Children’s Concert Chorus and various local ensembles. He is also the pianist for the Unitarian Universalist Church of Tampa much to the delight of the church choir and congregation.

THE ROWAN BROTHERS: Chris & Lorin's musical journey began over 30 years ago on Columbia Records. Subsequent collaborations with older brother Peter, David Grisman, the Grateful Dead, so many others and a Grammy winning song happened along the way. The path has come full circle with the duo's active re-entry into full time touring, a new release on BOS Music plus the full complement of CD reissues of all the Columbia and Asylum titles. SUE CUNNINGHAM: During their current Fla. tour they are being joined by Sue Cunningham. Sue is a winner of numerous fiddle championships and has performed and recorded with numerous bluegrass groups. On Sunday Jan 18, from 3pm to approx 7pm, there will be a mini-Florida Folk Music Festival/event entitled "APALACHICOLA DOIN' TIME" taking place inside the UU Dome. (There will also be a pre-event acoustic songcircle outside on the grounds from 1:00 - 2:45; participants and listeners welcome. ) Friends of Florida Folk, Inc, and the UU Church of Tampa are teaming up to present this event, the theme of which was inspired by theEdward R. Morrow award winning Radio Documentary of the same name. The documentary, which was produced by the University of Florida and WUFT FM,Gainesville, is about the Tri-State Water Wars (Fla, Ga, Ala) andFlorida's precarious water situation . During the event, there will be mostly music but also brief commentary by environmentalist Dale Crider and by Bill Beckett and Donna Green-Townsend of WUFT. The featured musicians in our lineup provided songs for the documentary. They will perform not only those songs, but also additional ones of their choice. There will also be a beautiful nature artwork display by Roxanne Tobiason of Brandon.
