FOLK MUSIC WITH A CLASSICAL TWIST!
May 8, Sunday, Concert: 2:30 pm. Doors: 2:00 pm. ( Note – Concert Time is 2:30 ! This is earlier than usual. ) $12 advance. $15 door.
Singing Tree (Lloyd Goldstein on double bass. Ray Belanger on hammered dulcimer) performs a unique and varied program of folk music from around the world plus Lloyd’s original compositions. Ray’s approach to the hammered dulcimer ranges from lyrical and melodic to energetic and exciting. Lloyd often employs the bow in a way that suggests the sound of a huge cello. Together they cover a wide range of musical styles, including traditional, contemporary and classical.
With the vibrant acoustic sound of their fine instruments and the originality and inventiveness of their arrangements, they leave their audiences amazed and elated .
Per Tricia Bratton, London, England: “We were fortunate to hear a concert by these amazing players on the eve of our cruise. Ray is a champion hammered dulcimer player steeped in the folk tradition; Lloyd had been a player with a symphony orchestra for twenty years before they met and began to influence each other’s playing. Their album SINGING TREE is a treat for the ears.
THERE’S NO BETTER WAY TO SPEND MOTHER’S DAY AFTERNOON THAN AT THE UU DOME WITH SINGING TREE!

B. SOUTH TAMPA HOUSE CONCERTS (STHC) WESTSHORE/GANDY AREA.

1. Wed Apr 13, 2011. JIMMY CROWLEY & MARLA FIBISH: Irish & Irish. http://www.jimmycrowley.com/c-f.htm

Jimmy and Marla are a compelling combination. Their sound evolves from their shared love for mandolin family instruments. They take delight in the playful dialogue between their instruments, filled with happy harmonies, frivolous fills and colorful counterpoint. Jimmy sings from his amazing song repertoire and Marla pulls out her favorite jigs, reels, and party pieces to deliver a variety of traditional music together on mandolin, mandola, bouzouki, mandocello and guitar.

Per Micheal O Sulleabhain, Irish World Centre, University of Limerick: Jimmy is a musical icon in Irish tradition. He sings out from his own ground to a world of listeners and the lift and lilt of his voice is the listeners’ joy." Per Dirty Linen: An unCorked bottle of delight overflowing with good spirits, effervescent vocals and brimful of good bouzouki and guitar playing.

Marla Fibish is a San Francisco native and a long-time feature of the SF Bay Area Irish music scene. Per Dennis Cahill: Some of the best mandolin playing in Irish music. Per Kevin Carr, Folkworks: Marla is a wonder on the mandolin; rhythmic beyond imagination, clear as a bell tone, great invention, lovely ornaments at just the right times and places, and a sureness and ease that allows the listener to relax and be carried away.

2. Thurs Apr 21, 2011. BROTHER SUN www.brothersunmusic.com

Pat Wictor, Joe Jencks and Greg Greenway have formed a dynamic new male trio. Their harmonies, as much as their lyrics, tell what they are about: warm as a campfire, stirring as a gospel church, rousing as a call to arms. Calling upon contemporary songwriting, and informed by the deep roots of gospel, blues, and folk, the trio weaves a tapestry of harmony that is brilliantly fresh and yet familiar. Nationally touring folk artists from three major points on the map - Boston, New York, and Chicago - Pat, Joe and Greg celebrate the amazing power of singing together. Their combined musical skills should make for an unforgettable evening - three rich voices blending on a well-crafted foundation of guitar, slide guitar, and piano (keyboard ).
You can listen to Brother Sun on the MUSIC section of their web site http://www.brothersunmusic.com/

3. Thurs Apr 28, 2011. BILL STAINES http://www.acousticmusic.com/staines/

.

Per the Washington Post: "A craftsman who has cobbled together evocative details, pithy aphorisms and singalong melodies into a trunkful of unassuming, marvelous songs." Over the decades, we have heard Bill singing on Garrison Keillor's A Prairie Home Companion, HBO's award winning series Deadwood, and Public Radio's Mountain Stage. Additionally, his music has been used in a number of films including Off and Running, with Cyndi Lauper, and The Return of the Secaucus Seven, John Sayles' debut as a writer- director.

Bill's music is a slice of Americana, reflecting with the same ease his feelings about the prairie people of the Midwest or the adventurers of the Yukon, the on-the-road truckers, or the everyday workers that make up this land.

Many of Bill's songs have appeared in grade school music books, church hymnals, and scouting campfire songbooks; he is one of only a few songwriters to have eight songs published in the classic song collection, Rise up Singing. Composer David Amram describes Bill as "a modern day Stephen Foster…his songs will be around 100 years from now."
